“Don’t try. Do”

Deepak Chopra’s response when I asked how he manages to write so many books while continuing his busy touring schedule. I guess this answer shouldn’t have come as a surprise, but it did. Reminding me of a transformative Yoda moment in Star Wars where he says to Luke “Do. Or do not. There is no try.”

try-not

One of life’s great illusions is that limitations exist. With many of our struggles coming from this simple belief. “I have writers block. No matter how hard I try, it never seems to happen” are thoughts I habitually excuse myself. Truth is, we are born new every moment and our attachment to who we were yesterday can restrict us. Just look around for the proof. All living things are in a constant cycle of expansion, filled with breakdown and breakthrough moments.

Don't Try

“Trying” to do something may be the very thing holding you back. The moment I began listening to Deepak’s advice and stopped “trying” to write a book, it began to write itself. Instead of focusing on the end goal, this attentive energy was much better served by enjoying the expression. Ideas flourished in this environment. A process that now allows Wayne Dyer’s deep meditative voice to spontaneously sing a song in my ear. A Cole Porte creation he liked to share during our events and one I feel compelled to repeat for you right now.

“Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies

Don’t fence me in

Let me ride through the wide country that I love

Don’t fence me in

Let me be by myself in the evenin’ breeze

And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees

Send me off forever but I ask you please

Don’t fence me in.”

You are stronger than you believe with talents you have yet to uncover and a depth that may be a little scary to fully acknowledge and accept at the moment. Be careful not to fence yourself in. Keep diving for the abundant, never-ending flow of creativity and all will be revealed in good time. Something I hope you remember the next time you “Try” to do something.

With love,

Joshua Dawson
